The Pros of The CW’s Stargirl Series for Young Readers

The days of waiting for a book to be adapted into a TV series or movie are over. With the ever-growing popularity of streaming sites, there is no better time than now for readers to adapt their favorite books onto the screen. In 2018, it was announced that DC comics’ most popular character Stargirl would become a live-action show on the CW. Stargirl is a story for young readers and one of empowerment and learning to accept who you are. These reasons have clarified why children and adults alike would love this series. Here are seven reasons why individuals should be excited about the Stargirl TV Series:

  • Young readers need to see themselves as heroes, and this series will help the youth see that they’re not alone in their struggles. Stargirl is a story about a small-town girl with big dreams and how she becomes such an extraordinary hero. “Stargirl has always lived by her own rules. Always strumming her guitar on the front steps of the courthouse, making up songs about what happens in this Podunk town” (Stargirl). At first glance, Stargirl might seem like your average high school girl, but she is an orphan who has experienced many difficulties throughout her life. Before becoming Stargirl, she named “Cindy” and did not know her real name. She was abandoned on a doorstep and remained unnamed until fellow student Leo Borlock gave her the moniker Stargirl, derived from an old 60s song. No matter what happens to Cindy/Stargirl, she stays true to herself and never lets anything bring her down.
  • The series, created by Geoff Johns, will appeal to a wide range of audiences, and many generations have enjoyed this book. One of the best parts about Stargirl is that it appeals to a wide range of audiences. “The story is incredibly beautiful, especially when it comes to the relationship between Leo and Stargirl” (Davidson). Since Stargirl was published in 2000, many young readers have related to Cindy/Stargirl’s struggles throughout the years (Collins). Every generation has its own set of problems based on their period. What makes Stargirl so timeless is how Cindy/Stargirl’s story can be related not only by young readers but also by generations worldwide.
  • The series will appeal to male and female audiences since it has a strong female lead. Stargirl has a strong female lead, and the series will appeal to both male and female audiences since it is about standing up for what you believe in. Stargirl follows, “The story of a young woman who may just be discovering her ultimate destiny as she takes on the mantle of superhero-dom” (Stargirl). Though Cindy/Stargirl may seem like an average young woman at first glance, she is a superhero who stands up for justice and what she believes in. Stargirl’s story teaches kids that even if they don’t think they can make a difference or inspire others, standing up for what you believe in makes all the difference.
