Rabindranath Tagore was a famed Bengali poet and philosopher who is considered one of India’s greatest writers. He was also a fervent advocate for social reform and helped to create modern Indian literature. In this quiz, we will be looking at Rabindranath Tagore’s life and work.

What were Rabindranath Tagore’s early years like?

Rabindranath Tagore was born on May 21, 1861, in Calcutta (then known as Kolkata). His father was a government official and his mother was a homemaker. Tagore grew up in an upper-middle-class household and received a good education. He began writing poetry at an early age and published his first book of poems in 1881.

What were some of Rabindranath Tagore’s most famous works?

Some of Rabindranath Tagore’s most famous works include the novels Gitanjali (1893) and Tulsi Sahib (1902), the short story collection Ghare Baire (1906), the musical opera Nandan (1915), and the essay collection Philosophy: The Essence of Life (1911). He also wrote extensively on philosophy, religion, ecology, art, education, and social justice.

Let’s begin with his childhood and education

Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 April 1865 in Calcutta, India. He came from a wealthy family and had a privileged upbringing. Tagore studied at the University of Calcutta and then travelled to Europe to further his education. He spent time in Germany, France, and England and developed a strong interest in Western art and literature.

Eventually, Tagore returned to India and began working as a teacher. He participated in various political movements throughout his life, including the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Non-Cooperation Movement. In 1913, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Tagore died on 3 January 1941 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is buried at Walden Ridge Cemetery near Dhaka.

Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1871 in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency (now Kolkata, West Bengal, India). He was the seventh of ten children of Debendranath Tagore and his wife Sarojini Devi. Rabindranath Tagore is considered to be one of the most important and influential poets in Indian history.

Tagore studied at Srirangam College and then worked as a clerk before starting a career as a teacher. He began writing poems while he was still in school and published his first book of poetry, Gitanjali, in 1913. In 1919, he founded the Jorasanko centre for young artists and writers in Santiniketan.

Tagore’s early works include novels such as Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panja (1930) and Ghare-Baire (1934), short stories such as “The Unhappy Wife” and “The Dance of Death”, collections of ghazals (Islamic love songs), essays on art, music, and literature, as well as plays such as The Post Office Girl (1935) and Mohenjo-Daro (1937). He also wrote lyrics for some of India’s popular patriotic songs, including “Jana Gana Mana” and “Amar Soniye”.

Tagore is best known for his poems, which explore the universal themes of human experience in lyrical verse.
